Imagine this: you are with your friends in your comfortable space, and then a total stranger enters that space. No one knows this person. Before he/she even utters a single word, there comes this brief quietness that fills the room.
This quietness is brought forth by nothing more than the judgements that are forming in all of your minds. You look into this stranger, and you are all judging him/her on whether he's trustworthy and likeable. Based on how they look, you will instantly make a judgement on whether to trust them or not. This happens automatically without your conscious effort into the judgments you make.
Such a scenario happens each day of our lives when we meet new people. And based on how you look, people can deduce whether you are kind and trustworthy or not.
The more attractive you are, the more likeable you are, and people see you as trustworthy.
Here are the five reasons why attractive people are more easily trusted.
Attractiveness triggers a faster, more favourable first impression
Attractive people are generally liked just for being themselves. When someone looks good in the eyes of their observer, they tend to be automatically liked. And because of this sudden fondness, the observer easily trusts the supposed attractive person.
While your brain makes first-impression judgements, the person's attractive appearance fills the psychological void, as you don't know that person.
Attractive people often receive more benefit of the doubt.
Because they are trusted from the onset, attractive individuals are often given more leeway in uncertain situations and are judged less harshly.
A career criminal can be given the benefit of the doubt because of their appearance. At the same time, an unattractive person can be persecuted for the crimes committed by the good-looking criminal simply because of how he looks. This even happens in workplaces, where you can be the most competent, but if your counterpart is more attractive than you, they can easily get the job purely based on their appearance.
Social conditioning through repeated associations
In the media we consume, from television to freeway billboards, attractiveness is often paired with positivity and heroism. And the more we watch movies, dramas, and everything else that is programmed, which aligns with attractiveness being placed alongside heroism, the more we believe it. That then is how we get socially conditioned. The more attractive the person, the more likely we are to perceive them with positivity.
Attractive people are assumed to have good health
When you see someone having clear skin, having the socially conditioned "perfect height", or "perfect body", you automatically believe they are in good health, hence they look the way they look. For example, there's a certain female body type that some men see and assume the woman is fertile. Leading them to believe that she has healthy traits and genes, and that motivates them to pursue that particular woman.
Attractive people are viewed as being more intelligent
It is easy for people to listen to and believe everything an attractive person says, especially when they speak about something uncommon. Because people get easily impressed by how the person looks, they equally get impressed by what the person claims to know.
This is not a conscious response; it all happens automatically in the psyche of every human. That is why a lot of scammers and charlatans who get away with lies are often attractive. You can ask any woman who has been played and dribbled by a guy; she couldn't see the guy's crooked ways even when they were blatant simply because she was fooled by the guy's looks. And she thought he must be intelligent; everything he says must be the way and the truth.
So, what this all teaches us is that we are not always aware of our responses to everyone we meet. The less attractive they are, the less we trust them. But the more attractive they are, we automatically give them the benefit of the doubt, our trust, and everything we have. Purely based on our unconscious psychological responses to attractiveness.
Therefore, it is important to be concerned about your looks as an individual. Whether you like it or not, you are heavily judged by how you look, including how you dress and smell.
Maybe the opportunities you need are there, but you lose them simply because you don't look attractive enough to be trustworthy. Or maybe you have gotten a big opportunity because of how good-looking you are. It all boils down to how attractive others find you.
