The Word Salary Originates From The Word Salt. Here's Why No Matter How Small Your Salary Is, Respect It.

Though it is easily accessible, salt is one of the most important commodities in the world. Here's how the term salary originates from salt.

In ancient Rome, salt was an incredible resource. It was essential for preserving food before the inception of refrigerators. So, the Roman soldiers were paid in salarium. an allowance that was meant to purchase salt, as it was crucial to their survival.

The word "salarium" comes from "sal," which means salt. Over time, this allowance became synonymous with the soldier's earnings, and that term, "salarium", evolved to mean wages in general.

It then evolved into the English language that we know today as salary. We hear idioms such as "worth your salt" and "salt of the earth", which demonstrate how essential salt was from the beginning of time until today.

I can bet that you would have a difficult time eating food without salt or any seasoning. Salt is what makes food not just enjoyable but bearable when it is bitter. It is what gives it taste. So is your salary.

The salary you earn today, in a monetary form, is your salt. It is what makes your life bearable, it gives it a little taste, even when it is not exactly the way you may want it to be.

I often observe people moaning about how small their salaries are, i.e., how small their salt is, ignoring the fact that no matter how small the salt is, it could be the difference between life and death.

Of course, we all deserve to earn in accordance with our skills and the value we provide. Sometimes we feel we are not given enough salt and lose sight of the importance of the little salt that we get. Others even opt to leave their jobs or commitments and choose not to have the salt at all.

Then they live bitter, tasteless lives because they lack that little bit of salt that made their lives bearable.

What I am imploring here is that almost all of us would find it impossible to survive without having salt or seasoning in our food. The little bit of salt we can get can be the only thing we need to enjoy the food at our disposal. And thus survive.

So is your income. No matter how unfair it may feel, it is wise to respect it, as it is crucial to your survival. You can die without it. Dying in this context means dying within your soul.

You can lose your dignity, your respect, and even yourself when you do not have salt, no matter how small it is. Therefore, your salary ought to be respected.

The little salt that you do not see its importance of, many others wish for it.

Work and build towards earning more salt, without denouncing the one you've been privileged with.
